On Tuesday, the Kansas-based mobile service supplier introduced an unlimited data plan exclusively for tablet users. It is being touted as a deal for only $20 a line per month, and promises “unlimited cellular streaming video, online gaming and streaming audio, and 4G LTE for most everything else in their tablet.” At first glance it looks like a smart way to get unlimited information on the cheap.

“We’re thrilled to provide our customers a chance to enjoy a Sprint tablet plans with unlimited information for a super price every month,” explained Roger Solé, Sprint chief marketing officer. “People use their tablets, in the home, school, or work — and, they now can use a Sprint tablet without having to worry about information overages.”

But be warned, there are a few drawbacks that may cause the deal somewhat less sweet than you initially thought.

Sure, you’re getting unlimited data information, but much like T-Mobile And its BingeOn app, Sprint will limit video streams at 480p, music streams at 500kbps, and gaming at 2Mbps. To be fair, that is the exact same limitation placed upon the users of Sprint tablet plans unlimited.

So if you’re already accustomed to those constraints, it is nothing new. If you’d like, you can actually obtain “premium resolution streaming,” but that’ll put you back an additional $20 per month. Therefore, if you’re willing to pay $40 each month purely to get unlimited data on your tablet, you will have the ability to enjoy movies at up to 1080p, HD Music streaming at up to 1.5Mbps, and gambling at up to 8Mbps.

The $20 unlimited plan, like Sprint’s Unlimited Freedom plan for phones, does come with some restrictions. Streaming is ‘optimized’ for mobile, meaning resolution and speeds will be capped: you’ll get up to 480p+ for video, 500Kbps for streaming music, and 2Mbps for online gaming.

If you’d prefer a HD experience for all your mobile streaming, you can upgrade to the Premium option for an additional $20 per line, per month. Premium speeds include up to 1.5Mbps for music, 8Mbps for gaming, and resolution of up to 1080p+ for video.

Tablets which are SMS-capable will also receive unlimited texting on both versions of Sprint tablet plans. Mobile hotspot is also available, but capped at 5GB per month.

Customers without Sprint phone service can still sign up for unlimited tablet data, but will instead pay $70 per month, per line. If you’re a customer with a subsidized tablet bought on-contract, you’ll pay an extra $10 per month in line access fees, and customers without AutoPay will pay an additional $5 per month.
